    Anathem

I’ve been reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson and it’s pretty great. An exchange that kind of sums up the book for me so far very well is this part where these sort of medieval monks who are also scientists get recruited to investigate a UFO sighting, and decide that they need an astrolabe for navigation and are going to build one from first principals.

“Do you need transportation? Tools? Stuff?”

“Our opponent is an alien spaceship packed with atomic bombs,” I said. “We have a protractor.”

“OK, I’ll go home and see if I can scrounge up a ruler and a piece of string.”

    Powell Butte and Larch Mountain

Yesterday we had quite a bit of an adventure. Since it was such a beautiful day (60’s and sunny!) after breakfast we drove out to Powell Butte, a park with lots of hiking trails on top of an extinct volcano. It was cold and windy up there, but quite beautiful, with shockingly picturesque views of Mt Hood, Mount St Helens and Mount Adams peeking out from behind some other low mountains.

Then last night we decided to drive out somewhere remote to try and see some stars. The night sky is generally pretty much overcast here, so it was kind of exciting to have a chance to see some big sky. Also there are so many remote wilderness areas in close proximity that it was tough to choose one to go to. We settled on Larch Mountain, since it’s pretty close and we’ve heard some good things about it.

Unfortunately when we got about halfway up the mountain the road was completely closed off for the winter.

Even still, the sky was brilliant with stars and the moon. We’ll have to go back there when the road opens, for sure.

After a while it was just too dark and cold and creepy up there. I was certain I was going to be eaten by a grue so we high tailed it home.

Anyway, check out the full set of pictures for more crazy hiking goodness.

    Mount Hood

I was going through some photos today and it occurred to me that I didn’t have a set of Mount Hood stuff. So here it is, in slideshow format. I got engaged up there, and come August I will be married up there as well. It’s really a cool place.

    Wizards vs Everyone

Earlier today I laid out a hierarchy of awesomeness, and wanted to archive it here for saving through the ages.

Basically what I said there was that Wizards are better than Ninjas which are better than Robots which are better than Pirates which are better than Zombies which are better than Cowboys.

Maybe I’m biased because I just like Wizards, but I think the rest of those things (except maybe Ninjas) are way over hyped.

    Writing Stuff

Well it’s been a busy couple of months.  Sadly, I failed to complete the Nanowrimo due to some extended traveling in November. I vowed to make it up by taking an online writing class, which turned out to be a really disappointing series of multiple choice quizzes.

So it’s a new year, and I have some new ideas.  I’m going to try and get into the habit of writing at least an hour every day and see where that leads me.  I found a cool writing workshop that’s held right down the street from me, so might have to start attending that.  I’ve got a separate blog I’ll be collecting fiction and stuff in and I’m going to start by revising some older stuff and putting it in there. I think I’m going to keep that private for the time being, but I’ll open it up at some point.

    NanoWrimo 2009

I’ve decided to try this little contest again and see if I can finish it.  I’m pretty determined to hit that 50K word mark, even if none of them make any sense.  It’s definitely at that point, I’ve already moved on to another idea from my original one but I’m going to soldier on.  So anyway, this is why I’m quiet here this month. Wish me luck.

Just testing out sending pictures with this IM bot thing.  Mt Hood is pretty sweet, isn’t it? We’re thinking about going hiking out there on Sunday. Hopefully we’ll even get snowed on.
