    Cape Lookout trail

Last weekend we drove out to the coast to go on another hike.  We went on a trail out to the very end of the cape at Cape Lookout state park.  It was a much harder trail than we’ve gone on before. The trail was muddy, rocky, full of roots, uneven and was very close to some sheer drops 800′ or so down to the ocean.  At the end of the trail we sat down and watched some whales surface occasionally, though unfortunately I didn’t get any pics of that.  As scary and strenuous as it was, we had a great time.  I’m definitely looking forward to going on more crazy hikes once a week or every other week or so.

    Digital: A Love Story

I was alerted to the presence of this game by Aqouli over here and immediately downloaded the thing and dug into it. It’s a text adventure executed entirely in an Amiga Workbench like interface, although I think calling it a text adventure isn’t quite right.  It’s more like a short story told through an interactive fiction medium. Everything in it is nearly perfect, from the startup screen to the realistic 300 baud modem sounds. It doesn’t take long to finish, so I highly recommend checking it out.  I would love to see more of this kind of game. The music by Brother Android also deserves some mention, as it is quite good.

Here’s a screen shot of me attempting to hack the Gibson:

    Anathem

I’ve been reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson and it’s pretty great. An exchange that kind of sums up the book for me so far very well is this part where these sort of medieval monks who are also scientists get recruited to investigate a UFO sighting, and decide that they need an astrolabe for navigation and are going to build one from first principals.

“Do you need transportation? Tools? Stuff?”

“Our opponent is an alien spaceship packed with atomic bombs,” I said. “We have a protractor.”

“OK, I’ll go home and see if I can scrounge up a ruler and a piece of string.”
