Delerium – Royal Oak Music Theatre

Honestly, it was a waste of $25 and a Friday night.

Performance wise, it was OK.  I’ve always wanted to see Kristy Thirsk perform live, and she did not disappoint. Her vocal range is nothing short of inhuman, and she had at least some rapport with the crowd. The rest of the show was just kind of eh, however.  Zombie Bill Leeb was on keyboards, and the light show consisted of zooming closeups of Delerium album covers and time lapse video of clouds moving over picturesque landscapes. Yawn.

Having said that, I could have still come away from the show happy and would have likely written a positive review of the whole thing. I have very nostalgic feelings about Delerium, having followed them for a long long time and loved their music through all the different phases. The thing that actually ruined my enjoyment of the whole show, and made me disappointed enough to leave early was the No Cameras policy.

I brought my little point and shoot camera hoping to grab some pictures to put up on Flickr, and share a few shots of the show with my friends and the world at large. No big deal, I thought. I certainly wasn’t going to make any money off of my crappy snapshots, nor was I stealing revenue from anyone. Who could argue with free publicity and getting the word out about the show? However, clearly stamped on the ticket was the policy of No Cameras or Recording Devices. This seems like a pretty archaic practice in a day when almost every cell phone manufactured has a ‘recording device’ as a standard feature.

I’m not certain if it’s a venue policy or a band policy, but it sucks and is a terrible business decision. I’m sure there are some reasons or other that someone felt that they needed this policy, and maybe they were in some way justified in hiring a whole bunch of security to enforce that policy.  But really it made for a very uncomfortable experience for me, and I would have thought that the enjoyment of the ticket purchaser was the most important aspect of a live event like this.

The overbearing presence of security made it basically impossible for me to concentrate on an already pretty humdrum show. I was shocked when one particularly zealous guard shoved past me to tell some people in the front to put away their cameras. I tried to sneak in a couple of shots, but was scolded by another no-neck thug in a security shirt “No Cameras.” He said. “Are you serious?” I said. “No Cameras.” He said again. And then three of them escorted a couple out the door, for the heinous crime of stealing the bands soul with their magic boxes.

I could see having a ton of security on hand for a show that might turn rowdy, but this was a bunch of black clads swaying gently in the breeze of Nag Champa. The guards were pretty clearly just camera police.

Anyway, what a disappointment. Delerium really is one of my favs. According to several years of last.fm data, they are my #9 most played artist. It’s really a shame that the show was ruined by something as stupid and even atavistic as this.

The residents royal oak music theatre

Omg the residents are coming here.

And actually, after having gone to the Delerium show at this venue I will probably not bother with this one either if it’s just going to be a camera nazi fest. That’s too bad.

New York City Laughing Squid Trip

New York City 2008 Laughing Squid Went to New York last weekend and it was everything I thought it would be, except the weather was hotter. Seriously, trudging through a hot humid subway system left me feeling pretty filthy at the end of the day. It was great to meet up with the other Laughing Squid team members, and I hope we can do so again soon.

Despite the limited amount of time we had there, we still managed to get around the city pretty well and got to see quite a few of the things I wanted to see. Ground Zero was pretty intense, and I took no pictures there. It just seemed a little disrespectful. I did take pictures elsewhere however, and you can find quite a few in the linked gallery over there. New York City. Probably wouldn’t want to live there, but definitely would like to visit again.

    We’re in this Together Now

I’ve left a few subtle clues, but I’m sure by now someone may have guessed that I am a big fan of the entity known as Nine Inch Nails. I’ve loved them/him since Pretty Hate Machine got me through the end of high school, and of course I recently saw them at the Palace in Auburn Hills.

Ever since that most recent show I’ve been blaring this song over and over. I dunno why, it’s an older song (1999!) that never really clicked with me before for whatever reason.  I guess I was too busy listening to bleeps and bloops and spinning glowsticks around when it originally came out to notice it.

I know that Trent Reznor has said in interviews that it’s not a love song.  And that, like most other Nine Inch Nails songs, it’s about a sick relationship that is one-sided and wrong.  But I just can’t get past the optimism and uncharacteristic happiness of the lyrics.

    You and me
    We’re in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through some how
    You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you

The chorus is just, I dunno, sort of hopeful and great and cathartic in a way that other, angrier, Nine Inch Nails is not.  And yet it still retains the bad ass-ness that is Trent Reznor.  I’m generally more on the low end of the Kinsey Scale, but I just want to say that this song makes me want to make out with this man, and I’m not ashamed to admit it in public.  He’s on that short list of people that also includes Brad Pitt, David Bowie and a few others.

Also this video is pretty sweet.

    New York City Drinkup

This coming weekend I will be in New York City, and am attending the Laughing Squid Drinkup at M1-5.  I went to one in Royal Oak, which I mentioned a few posts back and it was huge amounts of fun, so I expect nothing less from the New York crowd. Should be meeting some cool people and have lots of good times.

I’m pretty excited for the trip, as the last time I was in the city I went up in the World Trade Center, so you know that was some years ago. The list of things I’d like to see includes:

    • Chinatown
    • Central Park
    • The Ground Zero Site
    • Some sort of cool nightclub

We may or may not get to all of those things as I’m only going to be there from Friday through Monday morning, but I think that’s a pretty reasonable amount of stuff to cram into a weekend. So what else should I see or do while in the big city?
